How can I deepen my understanding of covenants?
"Just as aircraft pilots must obey certain rules to avoid disaster, there are laws, ordinances, and covenants we must understand and keep as we go through earthly life if we are to reach our goal of eternal life." -Elder Robert D. Hales
If you know me, you KNOW I almost have to have a kind of "theme" for my lesson. That's just how my brain works and helps me understand and connect with the lesson. So along with that theme I always need a handout. I went with the "theme" of airplanes and did candy airplanes. I'll talk through them down below, so easy and cute!
On to the lesson-Covenants are so important and help us so much in our lives. I wanted to make sure that the youth knew that and understood what was ahead for them if they made and kept covenants.
We have an incredible young man in our ward that is investigating the church and I wanted to make sure to put it in terms that all could understand and remember.
This month we've been learning about ordinances and covenants. Here's a little run down of what I have planned for this lesson.
-Share story from "Return with Honor" about Emergency Procedures.
-Have a discussion about what a covenant is. Read Covenant in True to the Faith.
-Read specific scriptures and find the promises we make and the promises God makes in connection with these covenants. Write them on the board in two columns. We're planning to read these- Mosiah 18: 8-10, D&C 20: 77, Abraham 2: 8-11.
-Watch the Spiritual Vertigo Video
-Talk about why we make covenants and the importance of making and keeping them.
-I referred back to this article a lot, "Return with Honor" by Elder Robert D. Hales.
Hopefully the youth will come to realize that covenant keeping strengthens, prepares, empowers and protects us.
So as they are 'flying' through life, it might not always be easy there will always be temptations and challenges, but if we are covenant keepers we will stay on the right path always!
As I mentioned before I'm giving candy airplanes with a little cloud cut out with a quote on it.
The candy airplanes are SO simple.
Here's what you need:
-Wintergreen mints
-sticks of gum
-Smartie's
-rubberbands
-gum wrappers (optional link below)
-tape if using a gum wrapper
Thread the mints with the rubber band. Place Smartie in between both mints. Place stick of gum on top and wrap rubber bands around to hold on to the gum "wings". Trust me it's so easy and you'll get the hang of it. I wrapped my gum with cute little Covenant Keeper wrappers before too.
-Side note- Wouldn't these planes be the cutest thing for a little boys birthday party, baby shower, or anything plane theme!? So cute and easy to whip together!
Here's a printable with both colored and not colored images, you can find the link for the Covenant Keeper gum wrapper and cloud quote HERE. There is a black and white version and a colored version so you can choose what works for you!
WoW! What a wonderful and well put lesson plan! Thanks so much for sharing! This will be perfect for our Sunday School class! Thank you!
