Youth Sunday School Lesson: Always Remember Him

How do I keep my covenant to always remember the Savior?

This lesson has so much incredible information about our Savior, Jesus Christ and how important it is to always remember Him.  We covenant when we take the sacrament each week to always remember Him, but it's often easy to get side tracked or loose focus on the Savior.  I wanted to help the youth remember how they can include the Savior always, and make Him the center of their lives and hearts.

The word remember was brought up so many times while I was preparing for this lesson I knew I had to use it in some way.  I gave each person a little bookmark to write down their thoughts and ideas on, to help them remember this lesson and how to remember Him.

They could use the individual words in remember to help them as well; for instance for R they could put-Reassured when we keep covenants.

We read Helaman 12:1-5, and Alma 37:36-37.

When we always remember the Savior, we can "cheerfully do all things that lie in our power," confident that His power and love for us will see us through."  -Elder Christofferson

I told them about one of my favorite scriptures, Proverbs 3:5-6 that says trust in the lord with ALL thine heart.  Not just a portion.  We also read D&C 6:36 and talked a little about fear.  I then showed the class one of my favorite Mormon Messages- Men's Hearts Shall Fail Them.  Watch it!! It's seriously so good!  We then discussed how it's easy to get confused or fearful when we aren't focused on the Savior always.

We talked about how they can always remember the Savior and make Him apart of their daily lives.  I thought of praying, reading stories about Him-Elder Costa's talk in the outline is a great resource for this, write in your journal about how you've noticed His hand through out your day/week/life, etc.

I also gave them the challenge to remember the Savior for a full 24 hours.  I had a seminary teacher give this challenge to me when I was younger and it was such an eye opener to me to see how often my thoughts stray.  It was a perfect time for me to prioritize my thoughts and life.

You and I can put Christ at the center of our lives and hearts and become one with Him as He is one with the Father.  We can begin by stripping everything out of our lives and then putting it back together in priority order with the Savior at the center.  -Elder Christofferson

As Elder Gong and Elder Christofferson said, Our Savior invites us to always remember Him because He always remembers us.  He said, "Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.  Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands."  We must never forget what He did for us.  Without His Atonement and Resurrection life would have no meaning, but with His Atonement and Resurrection our lives have eternal, divine possibilities.

I wanted the youth to remember to keep the Savior at the center of their lives and hearts so along with the Remember bookmark I also gave them a little heart handout filled with M&M's.  I found these little heart containers at Dollar Tree around Valentine's Day, but THESE are a great, cheap option too.  If you didn't want to use little heart containers you could use little foil wrapped chocolate hearts too.  You could even put a tiny picture or sticker of Christ in the center of the heart for Primary age kids.

This wire heart basket was perfect to store all the little handouts in, my Mom got it from the Dollar Spot at Target but HERE is a super cute option too!

If you'd like the free printable for the heart handout you can find them HERE!

I loved all of the talks found on the outline for this lesson.  Especially Elder Gong's and Elder Christofferson.  You can find all of them on the outline HERE.

Youth Sunday School Lesson: Covenant Keepers

How can I deepen my understanding of covenants?

I love that this month is all about Ordinances and Covenants, it's so important for the youth to understand and grow their knowledge of the covenants they have and will make with the Lord.

When we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

To start I began the lesson by asking what is a covenant and we read the definition in True to the Faith.  We then discussed some covenants we make and read the different scriptures in the outline to go along with them. We also created a graph on the board with three different sections:  covenants, we promise, and His promises.  We then went in to detail about each of these things for specific covenants.

At baptism we covenant to serve the Lord and keep His commandments.  When we partake of the sacrament, we renew that covenant and declare our willingness to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ.  Thereby we are adopted as His sons and daughters and are known as brothers and sisters.  He is the father of our new life.  Ultimately, in the holy temple, we may become joint heirs to the blessings of an eternal family, as once promised to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and their posterity.  Thus celestial marriage is the covenant of exaltation.  -Russell M. Nelson

We also talked about missionaries and how they help others understand and encourage them to keep their covenants.  I mentioned that even though we aren't full time missionaries right now we can be member missionaries and help ourselves and others learn and keep covenants.

Make, keep, deepen understanding and honor covenants made.

When we realize that we are children of the covenant, we know who we are and what God expects of us.  His law is written in our hearts.  He is our God and we are His people.  Committed children of the covenant remain steadfast, even in the midst of adversity...The greatest compliment that can be earned here in this life is to be known as a covenant keeper.  The rewards for a covenant keeper will be realized both here and hereafter.  Scripture declares that "ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God.  For behold, they are blessed in all things, ...and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven and dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. -Russell M. Nelson

Doesn't that sound amazing?!  So I wanted to make a little reminder for them to take home and remember this lesson and to deepen their understanding of covenants.
I hope they always strive to be covenant keepers!

This Covenant Keeper Kit Kat can be attached to a large Kit Kat or even staple a mini Kit Kat to it like I did for my class.  Perfect for any lesson about covenants or even a little baptism gift.

July Visiting Teaching Handout Ideas

That They May Be One

I love the message for this month!  All about recognizing and accepting the Lord's will for us and then listening and obeying.  When I first read this message I continuously thought of the Mormon Pioneers.  In Utah we celebrate their lives and example on the 24th of July, because that was the day they entered the valley so many years ago.  I can think of countless examples of each saint choosing to accept the will of the Lord no matter how hard it would be on them, or what was in store for them.

So no matter if you live in Utah or not I think July is a perfect month to celebrate these amazing pioneers.  I think as Latter Day Saints we all share a bond with these early saints.

His way is the path that leads to happiness in this life and eternal life in the world to come.
-The Living Christ

Call me crazy, but whenever I think of pioneer treats I think of taffy; and the taffy at Chocolate Covered Wagon is perfectly old fashioned and delicious.  They have so many flavors like cinnamon, pina colada, banana, blue raspberry and vanilla walnut-just to name a few!

Grab a bag of this fun mix of taffy and fill these adorable pails with them add a little bandana liner and you are good to go.  Or if you're still on the calendar train, pop this little printable (found below) in your IKEA frame with some fresh new ribbon.  An adorable old fashioned magnet would be super cute if you're doing the magnets or any fourth of July magnet would work perfectly too!

Or wrap them all up in one big bandana for a treat for the whole family!

I also wanted to share some pioneer stories with my visiting teaching sisters so they could have specific examples.  Add this to your handout and let them read these short stories throughout the month.

As we endeavor day by day and week by week to follow the path of Christ, our spirits asserts its preeminence, the battle within subsides, and temptations cease to trouble.
Elder Christofferson

I hope these printables help you and your sisters realize how important His will is for each of us, and makes visiting teaching a little easier! :)
